Everyone, well almost everyone longs to see a Bear when they visit the North Georgia Mountains. I remember in 2010 I personally had 10 encounters, most of them face-to-face with a Bear. One evening, a Bear sneaked up on me while I was literally laying in the road trying to get the perfect shot of a cabin I have recently re-listed in the Aska Adventure Area of Blue Ridge Georgia. This year, while I have only had one encounter, it seems as if many others are having lots of run-ins with Bears.
I don’t know if you have noticed or not, but the squirrels are absolutely going crazy this year. They are frantically squirming around everywhere gathering nuts for the winter. Now I have been told that this is a sign that we are in for a really bad winter. I haven’t looked that up on Snopes just yet, but it kind of makes sense. But what about Squirrels on the highways, have you seen it? I have personally witnessed 2 near car accidents caused by these furry tailed rodents. Unfortunately, I have seen more sleeping on the road than I have witnessed making it across, if you know what I mean!
So, that brings me to an article that I read this morning about the High Number of Bears Killed By Cars in Georgia this year. In all of my years in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains, I have only seen one Bear on the side of the road, but that was the Richard Russell Parkway on the way to visit Helen, Ga. However it appears, that due to the lack of food, the Bear are coming down from the higher elevations of the mountains and entering into some towns and communities that you just might not expect. Some of the areas are closer to the “Big City” than you might think.
