Have You Seen A Black Bear In North Georgia?
It was only a few short weeks ago that I was asked “Do you ever see any Bears?” My answer was simple, “…..not very often.” Boy was I wrong. I have seen more Bear in the North Georgia Mountains this year than I have seen in a lifetime almost.
Just last week I was on my way to a Home Retention Counceling meeting with a client near Helton Creek Falls just past Vogel State Park outside of Blairsville, GA. I had decided to take a short cut through Owl Town and stopped in to preview this listing in Chestnut Mountain and met a new friend right there in the front yard. The neighbor’s were outside next door and didn’t even know the bear was next door being nosey!
A few weeks before that I was showing property with a client and we were looking at this cabin in Big Sky near the Cohutta Wilderness . As we were drving up the mountain we saw a Black Bear take off through the woods that was sitting along the side of the road.
I also had a client that was meeting with Jim the Plumber at his new cabin in Hiawassee, GA . near Lake Chatuge just a couple of weeks ago. As they were discussing the final details of the job just outside the cabin on the drive-way, Jim asked the new owner to turn around slowly to see the Black Bear Cub that was walking down toward them out of the woods. He turned to see that there was not one, but two Bear Cubs. Now you know mama wasn’t too far away!
I came across a great article this morning titled Following In The Footsteps of Bears. Be sure to read it, it has some great tips should you see a Black Bear in the North Georgia Mountains . Please let us know if you have spotted any Black Bear during your visit or stay in the area. I would love to hear about them.

This reminds me why I want to have a cabin up there one day! Great stuff! Seeing a bear while trout fishing would be about as cool as it gets.
We were vacationing at the last resort, in Blue Ridge 8/5-8/13/2009. The bear was on our entrance porch about dawn monday and then returned wed night below our balcony/porch and then made a couple more visits to the entrance porch during the night. I cant say for sure if it was the same bear. We were so excited. We got pictures of him from the balcony/porch, but of course wasn’t foolish enough to open the cabin door on the entrance side. It was truly awesome. We hope to return to your lovely North Georgia Mountains next year. There are not enough words to describe the beauty of North Georgia and the wonderful people who live there. My family and I hope to return again and again. We cant wait to enjoy the beauty all around and maybe we will be lucky enough to see another black bear.
my friend an i subcontract for ETC as landscapers. we cut all their switch houses all over jasper, ellijay, and blue ridge and i’ve always been nervous about running across a bear. well yesterday we were on ray mt rd about a 1/4 mile from 515 and as we turned a curve we came up on a big black bear just walking around in the middle of the rd. judging by his size we guessed he weighed around 500 lbs. he didn’t seem too worried about our truck until we pulled within about 15ft of him then he slowly turned and wondered off the rd and up into the woods looking back a couple of times as he walked off then disappeared into the forest. which would have been cool but our next switch was on the other side of the woods so we both were constantly watching the woods as we were cutting. it was an eye opening experience for both of us we’ve always heard and known there were bears out there but never thought anything of it. now we’re constantly on the look out!
My wife and I have lived in Young Harris, GA for five years, and we’ve never seen black bears near our home until this fall. Two weeks ago, a mama bear with three yearling cubs strolled up to within a few feet of our deck. The dogs started barking and the bears ambled away. This morning, before sunrise, the same bears were a few feet away from our kitchen door. There aren’t many acorns this year, so I believe they’re looking for any food source they can find. We’ve decided not to fill our bird feeders this fall.
It’s the best time to make some plans for the longer term and it is time to be happy. I have learn this put up and if I may just I wish to suggest you few interesting things or suggestions. Maybe you can write next articles regarding this article. I desire to read even more issues approximately it!
